This man knows how to welcome people!

From the first minute, our host was dedicated to creating a pleasant stay for my two daughters and myself. Small attentions, generous explanations of the surroundings, suggestions of activities on his dear island for the following day, should I mention the flowers on the beds, everything was there. And that home...! Wow! The most exotic cottage of our stay! Hard to imagine how much time the host has put in the building itself and even more on the gardens. Thanks so much, you have made a great difference in my daughters first visit to Hawaii!

    Lovely rural get-away cottage!

This was a beautiful out-of-the-way place to stay on the Kona coast, and our host provided many amenities! We loved the beach and snorkel gear. The mango grove and views of the ocean are lovely. And we really appreciated the guide to local favorite beaches, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. My husband and I were here for a week, and 2 sons joined us for part of the time. We all loved it!

    Extroidenary!!

Wow! This place is as close as anyone can get of a true Hawaiian experience without actually living there. The atmosphere is tranquilizing, peaceful and as tropical as it gets. Harry has put a lot of heart into the landscape with every flower imaginable and the furnishings just add to the natural beauty. waking to the sounds of the birds and outdoors is the best! We looked forward each morning to our cup of coffee on the patio overlooking the ocean among all the beauty. And Harry makes every accommodation possible to enhance your experience. He's a phone call away or out of sight, whichever you prefer. And it's in a great location to experience a variety of beaches, hikes and volcanic sights which Harry gladly gives insight to. We hope to go back again and would highly recommend it to anyone! A unique unforgettable experience! So grateful that Harry shared it with us.

Starting Nov. 23, 2015, we stayed here three nights, and what an experience!!!

First off, we were a little thrown by reading a 'welcome guests' note with the wrong names printed on it, wondering if the cottage had been double booked. But no, Harry apologized for the mix-up of notes, an understandable mistake for a busy property manager. This cottage is very accurately described, and we especially enjoyed the shower and we made good use of the barbecue grill. The first night was when we fully experienced all the elements of this thickly tropical locale, and we realized how vulnerable we felt to mosquitos and screaming loud choruses of coqui frogs that would keep us awake. After our arrival, we discovered (from an online search) that we were in a high risk area for a dengue fever outbreak and we might be at risk for contracting the disease from infected mosquitos. We learned that some property managers do not feel responsible for giving health risk information to their guests, so we will do our homework in the future.

    LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!

We loved, loved, loved this place. It was like we transported our home to the Big Island. The cottage had everything anyone could want!! The lush surroundings overlooking the ocean were so breathtaking and beautiful. We loved sitting out on the lanai in the mornings with coffee and at night with a few cocktails....so relaxing and peaceful. This place for a home base for us was perfect...we snorkeled, hiked, and four wheel drived to some of the most beautiful destinations on earth. We visited the volcano, went to Hilo side to see some waterfalls, went north to Kona to visit the farmers market and watch some football, and farther north to spend some time on the best white sand beaches. Harry was an extremely gracious host and was so helpful with suggestions when we were torn between some things we should do or leave out. He was available whenever we needed him but didn't intrude. I really cannot say enough about this place and our host...you will just have to come visit for yourself. We can't wait to get back to our romantic getaway and go on some more amazing adventures.

    Getting Away From It All!

The Makalani cottage was exactly as advertised. You are up on the side of the hill with a beautiful ocean view from your bed and porch. Surrounded by papaya and palms and flowers. Pictures are very accurate! Furnishings were beautiful and Harry was very welcoming. You are south of the small town of Captain Cook and we put a few more miles on the car than planned. If you want to get away from it all, then this is your place!

    Amazing ocean views

My husband and I spent 2 weeks at Harry's vacation rental in south Kona in February. The cottage has everything we needed and Harry's extra touches (the homegrown fruit, the welcome note, the mosquito coils and citronella candle) added so much. There was plenty to do in the area, but it is approximately a 20 mile drive either north or south for groceries or laundry. It helps to plan ahead. We also really enjoyed the critters - Turkey's, pheasants, and even geckos. The ocean views from the cottage are absolutely amazing. You can see the beautiful water from virtually every window. We also really enjoyed meeting Harry and hope to have the chance to visit again.

    Beautiful little cottage

My husband, son, and I loved this little cottage. Harry has clearly thought about everything you might need. The snorkel equipment came in especially handy! I loved that it was away from the hustle of Kona. We felt like we had a nice quiet place to retreat to at the end of our long days of sightseeing. The basket of fruit was an especially lovely touch!
