Steps from the Sand Charming Beach Front Cottage Located on Makaha Surfing Beach

Description

The front yard is steps away from one of the world’s most beautiful sandy beaches. There is great snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding right in front of the cottage, depending on the swell, of coarse. Surfers can paddle out to the break from the front yard. This is also a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the ocean views. Besides other great views there are SPECTACULAR sunsets just about every evening. There are also early morning “full moon sets”, and occasional rainbows out over the ocean. (Makaha is on the dry side of the island). Watch dolphins, sea turtles and spouting whales from the front yard. This is truly a gorgeous one-of-a kind place! The cottage is clean with off white tile throughout. There are two queen beds; one in the main studio and another in a screened porch sitting/sleeping room. Visitors can hear the ocean lapping on the sand from both rooms. A bathroom with a shower/bath tub connects the rooms from a patio. The street-side patio is very private and screened in. There are tables and chairs on both patios as well as in the main studio. There is also a gas barbeque on the ocean side patio. Both patios are covered. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and pans. There is a large refrigerator with an ice maker, a two burner gas stove, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee grinder and maker. There are also diving caves, turtles, dolphins, whales and spectacular sunsets. There is a golf course minutes away as well as the harbor where a visitor can take dolphin and whale watch excursions, and deep sea fishing charters are also available. Centuries ago Makaha Valley was home to a group of Hawaiians (and their ancestors the menehune) who lived solely from farming and fishing. There is a ceremonial lava rock structure (He'iau) that has been restored by the Bishop Museum and is interesting to visit. Other amenities are the majestic Wai'anae Mountains

    Beachfront Cottage

We had a marvelous time at our seaside cottage rental on Makaha Beach. Not fancy, but clean and charming with an awesome view of the ocean. Extremely friendly owner who is easy to work with. Can't beat waking up each morning and having a seaside breakfast on the back patio. Time stands still

    Amazing Beach

This place is a gem. The beach house is not fancy, but it is a true Hawaiian beach house. I sat on the beach for days and usually had it all to myself or sharing it with only a few people. My husband could surf right off the beach. We had a great time; Gloria and Sean, the hosts, were fabulous; great people!. We met some wonderful people in this little town and enjoyed ever minute. Thank you!! Jane and Mac

    Fabulous Makaha Beach !

The cottage was rustic, funky, and charming, and the beach was incredibly beautiful. We went to Waikiki, Ko Olina, Pearl, and other sights, but every day began and ended with the beach. The sunsets were mesmerizing. After leaving the cottage, we visited four other islands, and Makaha had the best beach of them all.

    Location, Location, Location...

The best part about this place is the location. You are steps away from the beach and when I mean steps it is literally a stones throw distance from the back slider to the beach. And it is not a scrubby beach it is pristine gem of a beach which you can enjoy without having to make an outing out of it and most of the time you can count the number of other people on one hand. You could get back from a day out and just wander out to enjoy for a few minutes. If you are adventurous you can paddle out to the middle of the cove which contains coral reef and many colorful fish (look out for where the tourist boats drop their people on tours) that is how close and awesome this beach is, the sunsets are breathtaking. Additionally, you can hear the waves break and crash in sets all night long. You do not get all this at the reasonable price offered without a few tradeoffs; that being said you are on the dry side of the island directly off the perimeter highway. The cottage is very open air and has several resident geckos (they eat the bugs). It is mostly local on the leeward side of the island, which means you have a drive ahead of you if you wish to visit many other tourist destinations on the island. Traffic can be little heavy at times and the locals have a interesting driving style which takes some getting used to. None of these elements were detractors from our enjoyment of the place. We had one of the best vacations we have ever had here. When we were at the Makaha Cottage it was so relaxing and restorative. Is this place for everyone, in a word NO. If you are looking for a resort feel or B&B type of place, look elsewhere. If you are self sufficient and want a really awesome home base in an wonderful location, with as much or as little support from your hosts as you want/need and can accept a few "quirks" which come along for the ride, this is the place for you.

Great Beach, decent place, decent location

The best part of this place is that you walk out the sliding glass/screen door, walk across 20 feet of your grass and you're on the beach. It's a very quiet beach - surfing is just 400 yards north at Makaha Beach so most people hang out down there. There are no vendors etc pestering you on the beach either. The waves can be very mellow or up to 10 feet depending on winds and season. Water is clean. Beach sand is very good! There is very good snorkelling off the beach - there are a few boats that take tourists from the marina to a reef in the direct vicinity. The cottage is a cottage. There is wifi, a futon bed, a normal bed, fridge, indoor gas camp grill, outdoor bbq, microwave, small coffee maker and pots/pans/dishes. Lots of reading material and local music. Place includes its own bathroom and shower. The owner's sister and grown nephew live next door in the attached main house - but they are helpful and mind their business when not approached. There is a carport with room for one car. You'll need to rent a car as Makaha isn't close to much. This side of the island is the poorest area and reminds me of mexico a bit but feels safe enough and we were never bothered by anyone. You'll need to drive to any trendy foodfare, but there is a decent grocery store/liquor store/market/drug store within 10 minute drive and a couple local eateries which we didn't try out. The place is about an hour from Waikiki, 30 mins from the Disney resort at KoOlena. You CAN'T drive directly to the North shore along the northwest coast...there used to be a road there, but now there isn't. You have to go inland and up. It's only 25 minutes or so but we had visions of being closer which is why I'm including it in my review. If you want a beach that is basically your own private beach where you don't feel like you have to hide your cell phone in your beach, then this is the spot. We fell asleep listening to the sound of the waves but the road noise is also there to compete a little bit. There is a small patio just out the door that has some xmas lights for ambience where we would drink wine and listen to the waves. You can't REALLY see the beach from here due to the privacy hedge. We just moved the chairs 30 ft down to the beach if needed. There are towels, a couple of boogie boards, snorkels, beach toys etc supplied. Ice cube trays in the freezer.

    Great experience!

We stayed here with our two teens (they took over the screened in porch ) and had the best time! The location right on the beach was outstanding. We mixed our time with staying on makaha swimming, laying in the sand, boogie boarding, and snorkling with the sea turtles ( it's a bit of a swim out to the spot, just watch for the boats bringing in the turtle tours and you can figure out where to go) and taking day trips around the island. We loved the history of the cottage and Gloria and Sean were very friendly and helpful. Vicky was easy to deal with and helped us with any questions or concerns. She directed us to an awesome beginner surfing beach just 10 minutes away where we spent most mornings (army rest camp/pokai bay). Good snorkling there too! It was the perfect holiday!

    Rest, Relax and Renew

This place is not for everyone as previous reviewers have stated. If you are looking for a place where you walk out the sliding doors, cross the small lawn and arrive on basically your own private beach, this is the place. The cottage is cute, clean and comfortable. This side of the island is not the wealthiest and it shows in the homes in the small towns. We shopped at the local market, tried a couple of the local restaurants. All the people were so nice and helpful and the food was great. If you need the 5 star restaurants, fancy shopping places and LOTS of people, don't stay here. If you want peace and quiet, virtually no one else on the beach, this is the place. It's not a far drive into Costco, Target, Safeway. Just be aware of the time of day. There is a problem with the traffic! We got stuck in one traffic jam and watched the entire NCAA Men's basketball game on my smart phone. Luckily we had beverages in our cooler from that days outing!! We enjoyed our stay. It was very relaxing. Just what we wanted for our week in Hawaii to rest, relax and renew.

    Quiet Country Vacation

This cottage in Makaha is absolutely perfect if you want to get away from the rat race of Waikiki and Honolulu. My husband and I enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning! We nicknamed it our "love shack" where we had quiet dinners, watched gorgeous sunsets and took long morning walks on the beach. The cottage is not fancy, but it has all the amenities that you need and is very clean, comfortable, and private. We spent most of our time on the ocean view patio. The ocean is just steps away and the sound of the surf is your constant companion. Vicky is easy to work with and answered all of our questions, provided us with directions, was responsive to emails and phone calls. I highly recommend this property!

    Cottage on the Beach

Pros: backyard is the beach, cozy setting inside, nicely decorated, beautiful views, bbq access, backyard lights, hose to rinse off sand, washer was nice to have, you can hear the ocean from the bedroom but can also hear road noise, basic kitchen essentials (no oven but propane camp stove provided). Cons: no AC (we visited in September and it was very very humid, almost unbearable to sleep at night), location is secluded but in a very poor town with limited access to variety of restaurants and things to do, an hour away from north shore, waikiki, etc. bad traffic to get back to the cottage at all times of the day from our experience, I also accidentally stepped on a cockroach in the middle of the night, which was startling. Overall, this place is definitely for people that are looking to stay local during their vacation. We recommend going off summer season because of the humidity and lack of AC. Otherwise, the cottage itself, the beach, and views are worth it.

    So relaxing!

We had such a peaceful relaxing time in this little bungalow on the beach. Listening to the waves crash, watching the sunset from the patio with a fruit and rum drink we blended ourselves. Snorkeling out to a top snorkeling destination that you can reach from the beach. We ended up mostly staying in, cooking our meals, just really relaxing. There is a nice state park 6 miles up the road with lovely hiking and whale spotting. There are always turtles out front riding the waves. Need to know--the surf and current are often very strong and at times the beach was posted for no swimming. There is no oven. There is a washing machine and a line to hang clothes. The ants will immediately find any crumb of food you leave behind. This became war for my husband! You share the yard with the main house but there are privacy barriers. The place has a camp feel about it, but we enjoyed the casualness of it. One star lost for the bugs and certain things that were a bit ramshackle (one screen door that was barely operable for example). We would definitely return!

    private beach cottage

My wife and I had a wonderful time at this cottage. As other reviews will state, this place is not for the caviar-eating, everything-has-to-be-perfect type of tourist. There are bugs, but the cute little geckos help keep their numbers down. No AC, but the fan works very well. The cottage is private, clean, and mostly quiet. Saturday night was filled with booming bass vehicles driving up and down the street. On the other hand, this place is NOT the rat race of Honolulu, and we were very thankful for that. Vicky is very easy to work with, and Gloria & Sean are friendly neighbors. The beach is amazing! The surf can sometimes be a little rough for amateur swimmers, but it's clean, quiet, and it's fun watching the surfers. The place has a very personal feel to it, allowing the renter to explore the history of the house and the family who lived here. Nice BBQ. No oven, but gas stove top & microwave. Next time we visit Oahu, I'll certainly check this place for availability.

    A paradise....In paradise

If you are looking for a 5 star hotel with all bells and whistles this is not your location..... If you are like us and wanted a quiet more private location on the sand this IS your spot. We loved this little cottage that was just like "home". It was nice having doors open...fan going.... and coming to and from our pretty much private beach for a meal or whatever we needed....We were able to drive a hour to skydive, horseback riding, swim with dolphins and return for our peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle on the pretty much private beach in our front yard....... We are SO thankful to have found this little gem and will be back to enjoy it again.....

    Nice beach cottage!

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage, only steps from the beach and great swimming. We had everything we needed for a wonderful stay! Thanks!
