Description

Welcome to Sunnybrae Mansion! Sunnybrae Mansion is comfortably nestled on 91 acres in Milford, Delaware. This 6,800 sq. ft. three story mansion that was built in 1937 by a close friend of Delaware's own world renowned DuPont family. It is a splendid example of the Georgian Revival style. Its Flemishbond brick section, capped by a slate roof, centers between frame sun porches. Within its foot thick outer walls lie 10 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 3 kitchens, a living room and dining room and more. Sunnybrae has outstanding southern plantation charm and is the residence of Lynn and Karen McColley. The name Sunnybrae derives from a Scottish word meaning sunny slope. Sunnybrae Mansion was purchased by Lynn and Karen McColley in February of 2002. One of their favorite features is its impressive entrance. Black iron gates dipped in gold with bronze plaques open to the 1000 foot long driveway that is lined with Sawtooth Oaks and Sunset Maples. The drive is complemented by the massive flagpole with majestic flags that seem to welcome you as you approach. The interior displays hardwood flooring that emulates the best work of the 19th century. It features early 20th century amenities such as a dumbwaiter and laundry chute. It also was built with a telephone booth, wine cellar, barber shop, dance floor with bar, and a walk-in vault with 2 inch thick steel doors to secure valuables. Upon your arrival to the Mansion, you walk across slate sidewalks and onto a herringbone brick portico. Your gaze is drawn upwards and the grandeur of this Mansion is revealed. 20' tall massive fluted pillars with huge ornate Corinthian styled cornices give a commanding presence of awe. Sunnybrae boasts a harmonious blend of unique family pieces, antiques, and reproductions. Some special points of interest are: the rare and original brass box lock on the front door; the Italian green marble pedestals majestically placed beside the breath-taking mantle mirror that engulfs the entire wall. This in turn reflects the grandeur of the grand piano. Not to be outdone is the equally impressive ten piece Edwardian dining room set across the foyer, complete with rosewood insets surrounded by dark walnut in the main table. To complement the table are rose marble insets on top of the buffet and tea server. Each bedroom and sun room take on their own unique characteristics to the smallest detail.

    enough space

Lynn made us feel very welcome upon arrival and was readily available for any concerns we had throughout the weekend. We enjoyed our stay in his very eclectic home although a few of us took cold showers due to a small problem with the hot water heater which he said will be replaced. We also noticed a bit of an ant problem which should also be taken care of by their pest control person. All in all we were pleased with having a pool table, easy access to Rehobeth, Lewes, etc and enough space for all of us with plenty of bathrooms to go around.

    comfortable

We really enjoyed our stay at sunnybrae mansion. From the moment we got there, Lynn was very attentive. He gave us a detailed tour of all the rooms explaining the rich history of the house. It was so interesting to be able to see and touch everything. It felt like we got to stay in a museum! From bringing us a grill (!!!) to showing us around his farm Lynn made sure we felt comfortable and had everything we needed. Our son and dog had the best time running around the very spacious outdoors and exploring the leaves and flowers. (And the weather was perfect.) Thank you Lynn!

    beautiful

The mansion is absolutely gorgeous! It was clean and immaculate. The hosts were incredibly friendly and accommodating. They made us feel very comfortable staying at Sunnybrae. I would definitely recommend Sunnybrae to anyone who likes a quiet and relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings both inside and out.

    great place

We had a board retreat at Sunnybrae and it worked perfectly for us. Lots of bedrooms for our board members, fun games to play at night (including a pool table and poker table), and a great place to gather and work during the days.
