Els Jardins de la Martana

Situated in the village of Besalú (La Garrotxa-GIRONA), within its historic-artistic centre, it is the only building situated on the other side of the Romanesque bridge, with an impressive view over the village. Built at the beginning of the 20th century (1.910), its main entrance looks at the bridge and its gardens reach down to the river Fluvià. We have 10 rooms, 7 doubles with possible additional bed, and three familly rooms. All have bathroom "en suite" with a bath tub, TV with USB connector, minibar, telephone and Internet (WIFI).

    “Muy recomendable”

Era la segunda vez que me alojaba aquí. Un hotel muy acogedor. Que bajo mi punto de vista a mejorado desde el año pasado. Limpio, tranquilo. Tiene varias estancias en las que puedes pasar un rato leyendo un libro, incluso puedes encender una chimenea por la noche, como nosotros hicimos. El desayuno bastante bueno y variado, incluido en el precio de la habitación. Es un poco caro, pero para darse un capricho vale la pena. Muy buen situado.

    “Great Location”

My husband and I spent two nights at this hotel in late May 2010. Our room (# 1) was a large corner room with both a balcony on the riverside and a terrace on the other side. Although situated just beyond the front desk, it was quiet. The hotel’s main asset is its extremely good location on the river at the entrance to the bridge leading to the old town. Unfortunately, its interior is due for a thorough cleaning and freshening up. The owner was friendly, but more preoccupied with her large, handsome Great Dane (who bounded into the small lobby to greet all arrivals) than with her lodgers. Especially interesting in the old town is the site of the medieval Jewish women’s ritual baths that can be visited on a brief tour arranged through the Visitor Center.

    “Friendly staff perfect location”

After a long day driving and exploring we found our way to the beautiful town of Besalu and even tho we were meant to be driving further we liked it so much that we decided to stay the night. We didn't have any reservations but were greeted with open arms, the lady was very friendly and helpful along with her trusty great dane which had a beautiful nature. The location was superb, right at the entrance of the bridge which leads you straight into town. The rooms were very simple but i was happy with my overall experience here and would definitely return. It is close to the other bridge on the highway that overlooks the village and the 12th century bridge so when the sun rose i was out there like a shot to capture some fantastic shots.

    “Spanish Treat”

Spain is a great country for motorcyclists. Nice empty back roads and lots of curves winding through mountains and valleys past vineyards and olive groves. We arrived at Besalu, a well-preserved medieval town dating back to the 10th and 11th century. Upon arrival we took a most convoluted route all around, up and down narrow cobbled streets to discover we were cut off by Pont Fortificial (fortified bridge) over the River Fluvia. Finally disentangling ourselves from the maze of streets we found Els Jardins de la Martana Hotel, a charming mansion set in the out of town end of the grand old bridge. We paid more than our budget but we had a lovely bath, tiled floor and high ceilings. It had a lounge with a fireplace as well as a large library and garden. It was a nice place to unwind and a small treat.

    “Interesting common areas, great bathroom”

Great location at the foot of the bridge into Besalu, nice staff, a bit worn (OK, perhaps a lot worn) but in a faded sort of interesting way, the largest bathroom I think I've ever had anywhere with a huge tub, and a good bed. So, my husband and I slept well. The hotel has an air of faded elegance, but the room itself (apart from the giant bathorrm) was about as spartan as they come. But, it was quiet and we slept well, so that's the most important. It just doesn't live up to what you might expect looking at the outside.
