Casa Audouard - Palacio Salieti
DescriptionThe city of Girona bursts with gourmet delights and teems with history: Jewish quarter, Arab quarter, gardens, cloisters and soaring cathedral. Here, in the walled city’s heart, is a big, dark, 14th-century mansion renovated in 1911 by Rafael Masó – and how! Imposing stone staircases link three floors, wooden stairs spiral to the roof terrace, the cotta-floored salon is large and lofty with a mezzanine library, and gothic arches and windows abound. There’s even a chapel below ground with a passage to the cathedral (an escape route for when the French invaded in 1809). Decorative tiles distinguish the hall, the furniture is dark and antique, and breakfast is served at a long old table beneath a dripping chandelier. Delighted to be opening their ancient doors to guests, Signor Torras Audouard lives here, ready to give guided tours of the city, and daughter Sonia meets and greets. Ten bedrooms wait upstairs, one with its own ensuite, some with antique Catalan beds, most with decorative floor tiles. Absorb the city’s beauty, relax in the Casa’s charming walled garden close by.
