    Lava House a unique experience

If one seeks something different than the humidity, crowds and traffic of the Kiluea-Kona strip, then Ocean View may be right for you. Ocean View is a somewhat off-the-beaten-path community that is both economically and culturally more diverse than the tourist homogeneity of Kona. Lava House (in Ocean View) sits about 3,000 feet up the side of Mauna Loa, smack on the 1907 lava flow, in a unique and nicely landscaped setting. Being at that elevation means that it has outstanding views from the huge decks, but also that it can be cool adn breezy. Bring your sweaters for the evenings, and perhaps enjoy a warming fire on the cooler nights. The living room is big enough for a square dance! Lava House is very well kept, has large bedrooms, clean fully stocked bathrooms and a very large fully stocked kitchen, including coffee maker, toaster, blender, dish washer, etc. It has an especially nice kitchen with acres of counter space which is important because Ocean View does not have many quality dining options, so cooking-in is suggested (by me). In that regard I would suggest doing as much shopping as possible in Kona as the stores in Ocean View are pretty rudimentary to my taste anyway. This goes double for protein items like chicken, fish and any thing that might be more than entry level in other Dept's. (I would also encourage one to travel with their own Chef's knife if checking baggage. The knives at most any rental can be marginal, and make cooking miserable. As a geologist I work all over the world and travel with a cheap, $30ish bucks Victorinox 'Swiss Army brand' Fibrox Chef's knife which is excellent, rated better than the ones tens time as expensive and a terrific bargain.) Lava House has a very nice surround-sound audio system, and currently it plays cd's. So if you have your music on a phone or iPod, it may not interface with the existing sound system (we couldn't figure it out anyway). There is a ancient outdoor grill that is on it's last legs, so you may want to contact the owner about any updates there. In summary it is a well kept, very functional and large house in a unique setting.

    Just what we needed!!

This home is located high on the flow for wonderful views and serenity. So quiet you can hear the birds cooing! Even saw lots of wild parakeets! The fireplace with all you need feels great when the wonderful chill arrives due to the elevation for a great contrast to the warm days while exploring the south end of the US. The home has everything and perfect for six or eight although it was just the two of us. Unbelievable, huge deck completely around the home with a perfect setting to sit and ponder. Even while exploring the south end of the island. still managed to relax and read my first novel in a while. The beaches are about 30-40 minutes away but beach toys are supplied. The huge kitchen with everything you need is great and there is a washer and dryer, too. Two bathrooms gave us a his and hers opportunity. Very unusual setting and we would definitely stay there again. L and L

Good base location for exploring the Big Island

Lovely home, spacious and well equipped. This property is clean, very well-maintained and is in a great location for exploring the island. Fantastic views from the wrap-around porch and lovely landscaping on the property to admire. Linda does a great job maintaining the property and is very friendly and helpful. Quiet and peaceful and a great place to hang out. Mornings and evenings can be cool, as Joanne told us, but weren't cool enough for us to need a fire. We would definitely recommend to others.

    Great location and house

This house was large, clean and fully equipped to handle all 6 of us. We had boogie boards, beach chairs, sand mats, a new bbq grill and lots of shampoos, soaps and linens. Great central location for accessing both sides of the island. The lanai was awesome to sit, eat and watch the sunrise and sunsets. The nights were cool, making it great for sleeping and the days were comfortable, not too hot. It was easy to find and there was a grocery store down the hill and a couple restraunts. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone who wants a central location and quiet.

    Exceptional in so many ways.

The house is spacious, airy, bright and exceptional in all respects. The house is secluded: there are neighbors but nothing close by to be seen or heard. There is all one needs for all occasions. The kitchen is very well appointed with all the needed utensils; however, if one is doing serious chef work, pack a quality knife. The breeze and views are WONDERFUL from the wrap-around porch! Though on a catchment system - and we were mindful of this - our six members never had a water problem. Joanne has a large selection of beach/water items on the lower porch including a kayak; however, I recommend you either pack snorkel items or stop at a Walmart (I just HATE recommending Walmart!) and purchase on your way in. You WILL want to snorkel! The following is recommendations/information about the area. (no reflection on the exceptional house) ~ The Oceanview market at the base of the hill is a full line grocery that stays open until 9 p.m. The prices seemed in line with other places on the island ~ The house is a substantial distance from most everything. You will drive a lot. Gas is about one USD higher than mainland. Thus, plan your day linear and one can accomplish a lot. ~ Joanne and guest have provided/left guide books about the island. Use them for they will save you a lot of time. ~ Pack a sweater and an umbrella! ~ Be sure to drive across the saddle road. Despite what some of the guidebooks read, this is a very nice modern highway (not just a "road"). ~ Seek out the local restaurants and roadside "shacks". You will be rewarded. ~ Stop and pick the fruit along the roadside. Stop at roadside fruit stands and buy the local stuff. Be prepared for all future like and similar fruits on the mainland to be a huge disappointment. ~ Snorkel at the tide pools and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. An experience you will never regret and will forever change your life. Humbling. Wondrous place, exceptional host and house. Make a dream come true.

    Beautiful house

We really enjoyed the lava house. It is so quite out there, such a nice change of pace from Oahu. The wrap around porch is amazing. Plenty of space for our family of five. Linda was waiting when we arrived. She is so nice and friendly. We would definitely stay here again!

Out of the way piece of Hawiaan heaven

Having never visited the island before, the location was intimidating but easy to find with the maps app on my phone. That same remote location makes this house perfect for a relaxed getaway on the Big Island. The house is 3000 feet up Mauna Loa, so the days are warm'ish and nights are perfectly cool, no a/c needed here! Coming from a metropolitan area, the quietness, tranquility, and incredibly dark skies were the best features of this house. Located roughly half way between Kona and Volcanoes National Park, it's the perfect base camp for exciting day trips. Remember, the Big Island is big so you will still drive a good distance to any attractions. The generously stocked kitchen, guide books, and outdoor grill were very nice surprises. The house was spotless, and very well supplied, the owner obviously takes a lot of pride in this property. Advice for potential renters: don't be afraid of the location, it's completely worth the effort to get here; stock up on food in Kona or Hilo, there is supermarket in Ocean View, but the prices are very high; take time to go for a walk in the neighborhood and enjoy the exotic plant life, lava field, and the peace and quiet.

Beautiful home with a stunning view

Be prepared for brisk mornings that will quickly warm up as the sun rises. Mornings on the deck outside, with our coffee, were especially nice as the sun always seems to shine in the mornings. The evening sunsets were gorgeous. We enjoyed being half way between the Kona and Hilo sides of the island for exploring, enjoyed meeting the locals in the area, and the colorful little towns that also intrigued Mark Twain. Linda keeps the house well cared for--fabulous big kitchen if you are traveling with friends or family and can you beat that price? It was a different experience and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Mahalo Joanne and Linda! The Lamourias.

Spacious and Great Views and Close to Great Sites

It was perfect in every way and so convenient to visit our relatives in Oceanview. If you are not visiting relatives in Oceanview like we were, It is definitely a great place to visit so many "Top spots" on the Big Island. We visited South Point, Green Sands, Volcanoes National Park, Black Sands, Whittington Park, little known Kawa Beach, Milolii, Hookena Beach (now open), great eats at Hana Hou and Pulaluu Bakery in Naalehu. So many great sites to see within a short drive and Kau Coffee everywhere. If you really want the city life, there is Kona and Hilo an hour/hour 1/2 away. The house with three bedrooms and 2 baths was perfect for our group and could really accomodate a larger family with the 3 queen beds and a queen sofa/bed. The kitchen/great room is huge and the wrap-around deck/lanai is amazing. The owner is fantastic to work with and Linda, the caretaker, was there if you needed something or had any questions. Everything made for a very comfortable vacation and visit to the Big Island. You have several people, in Oceanview and Illinois that will spread the word about this great rental on the Big Island.

Very beautiful, peaceful, specious, clean, decorated house.

It would have been perfect with availability of 100% kona coffee for brewing upon arrival. We enjoyed staying at Lava house. Everything was in place for cooking our own food as needed. I would stay again if I visit big island in future.
